The food drive was a success!

We had a successful food drive this year! Thank you to everyone who participated and particularly to Paula for helping organize it and to Earth Fare for donating the bags!

Building the Sukkah this Sunday

We will start building the Sukkah at noon on September 15th. Don't forget Rabbi Dreffin will be here next weekend! We will have Kiddish and Havdalah in the sukkah!

Yom Kippur Service Schedule

1) FRIDAY EVENING (SEPT. 13) EREV YOM KIPPUR (KOL NIDRE)

• Begins at 6 PM SHARP.  The Kol Nidre will be chanted before sundown.

2) SATURDAY MORNING (SEPT. 14) SERVICE (YOM KIPPUR) 

• 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Morning Service
• 4:30 p.m. Discussion led by the rabbi 
• 5:00 p.m. Children’s service 
• 5:30 p.m. Yizkor service starts
• 6:00 p.m. Neilah service
• 7:15-ish p.m. Shofar blast
• 7:30 p.m. Community Break-the-Fast Buffet at Jon and Tracy's. You can drop off your dish(s) starting about 3:30 PM.  The synagogue will supply lox, cheese, bagels and drinks.

High Holy Days Food Drive

The High Holidays are a time to not only reflect about how to repair and strengthen each individual’s relationship with Adonai, but also on how to make a difference and help repair the world. Many communities use the opportunity of Yom Kippur, when many of us chose to be hungry for a day while we fast, to also remember and do something about people in their communities who struggle with hunger every day of the year. This year, Beth Shalom will be having a food drive to support the Food Bank of East Alabama. On Rosh Hashanah there will be paper grocery sacks, donated by Earth Fare, with information from Mazon, a Jewish non-profit focused on fighting hunger, and a list of the items most needed by the food bank. We are asking all, who care to participate to take home the bag and bring it back on Yom Kippur with non-perishable items. There will also be a donation envelope for those who care to help Mazon at this time.

In Mazon's words:

"Jews share a sacred duty to accept responsibility for the vulnerable people in our midst. MAZON seeks to uphold that obligation by embodying twin Jewish ideals: tzedakah (justice) and tikkun olam (repair the world)."
